Using Competition as Fund Raising Motivator

By Jim Chow

Fund raising is a challenge for any organization. Schools, churches and other religious groups, charities and special interest groups need money for many reasons as do we all.

While it is easy to get the group to agree that money is needed, it's another matter on deciding how to do it.

Activities range from garage sales, bake sales, semi-nude calendars, raffles, dances, talent event, producing a newsletter and selling advertising, generating publicity and asking for donations...

The next task is to set up a committee to assign people to the various tasks the fund raiser needs. Designing posters, calling potential donors, reminding people of meetings and all the little things that need to be done.

With no pay for volunteers, you need to offer recognition and other non-monetary rewards to keep people motivated to help the cause.

This is where competition or having a simple contest brings out the drive in people. Divide the group into two or more teams. The task has to be specific and measurable.

These contests can be the most telephone calls, most posters put up and of course most money raised. Non-monetary contests acknowledge the other tasks that need to be done and creates inclusion of those involved in tasks not generally seen as higher value. The bottom line is all tasks are important because without them, nothing will be accomplished.

One method to raise money and to keep open communications with the group is paid social networking. There are websites that are free to join and require no purchases that will pay you for becoming a member. They generate advertising revenue based on the number of members they have. The more members, the more they charge for the ads. No matter how you slice it, the game is to get members. Some social networks have complicated requirements before they pay you small amounts if anything.

6 degrees pays you $3 for the first person you sign up and will even pay you for the people your people sign up. You earn $2 on members your signups find. This goes 6 levels deep.

Here is the plan:

$3 for each friend you refer
$2 for each second level referral
$1 for each third level referral
$1 for each fourth level referral
$1 for each fifth level referral
$1 for each sixth level referral

Qualification is very simple. Just set up your account and do what you normally do. Stay in touch with your friends and group. That's it! If everyone signed up just one person like you, you would have $9 for your cause. The money goes up when you sign more people. There's an online calculator that shows how a group signing up a few people each can generate thousands of dollars quickly.

Remember there is no cost to you, the group benefits from the money and you're doing what you would normally do. There are other social networking programs that pay you but it's only pennies and not dollars and you have to do many things to qualify for the money.

Start raising money for your group today. Have a competition at your school. Geeks vs Jocks. Chess club vs Drama club. This way you'll really see who's best.
